I have been staring at a flashing cursor for nine minutes trying to decide if I should write this section about boogs baby booteek, or myself. Nine minutes that I could have been doing anything else. Anything. Painting my toenails. Reading a book. Doing a sit up or two. I could have even managed to fold the load of laundry covering my kitchen table.
Four of my five kids will be exploding through the front door at any moment, scattering their school papers, lunch boxes and jackets across the kitchen. To add to the chaos, my littlest will wake from his nap and demand to put on his shoes to “go bye-bye car”. He is a Virgo and will literally melt into a puddle of 2 year old mush if he isn’t on the go every minute of the day. My oldest, who is 14, will rush through his homework in hopes to get onto the computer to play one of his favorite video games. He’ll sit right next to me, his tongue playing with his rubber band connected to his braces, making an irritating “twang” every second and a half. If that isn’t enough, he’ll lean over his shoulder to read what I am writing only to make suggestions as though he wasn’t currently earning a “C-” in English.
My two girls will fight over who gets the last pudding for snack, who has to clean up their oozing puddle of brother, and who gets to walk up the stairs first. My five year old son, Aiden, will take advantage of all the commotion and sit quietly in the far corner of the kitchen hunching over his candy bag from Halloween. We will only find him after my 2 year old suddenly transforms back into solid form because he somehow spied the sucker Aiden is holding.
Before I know it, my husband will be home hoping that I am wearing a strand of pearls, high heals and mixing a drink for him as he walks through the door. Only to be disappointed (again.) when he sees a box of cereal, milk and 7 bowls on the table. Maybe a banana and a carrot, or two, as well. After all, the kids need to eat something healthy…
I digress.
